Tiny Controversies

Coke or Pepsi? Cats or dogs? These are a few controversies that often lead to arguments and fun debates in every-day life. To “find” an answer to these questions, we decided to create a survey in which we asked the scouts of Troop 220 to give us their opinion. Most of the scouts who responded had similar opinions in many of the questions, resulting in a winner in all of the questions, even if it wasn’t unanimous.

To begin with, the first controversy was a debate on pouring milk or cereal first in your bowl when enjoying a bowl of milk and cereal. Majority of the scouts chose adding cereal to the bowl first, with a reasoning that it is easier to get a good proportion of milk-to-cereal if you pour the cereal first. The remaining 36% of the scouts claimed that they put milk first to keep the cereal crunchy, and many of the scouts who chose this option also preferred warming their milk ahead of time. People sure have different ways to eat their cereal!

The next question at hand was the debate on Coke or Pepsi. Majority of the scouts chose Coke, and didn’t feel too strongly about the topic, but said that Pepsi was like the poorer off-brand version of Coke.

Our third controversy was a delicious one: if you should bite into or lick ice cream. This question had a clear winner, in which everyone, except for one scout, chose to lick. Many of the scouts who chose the lick option felt very strongly about this topic. For example one of the scouts said, “Anyone who wants to bite ice cream really hates their teeth. I like to take my time and plus I hate that cold feeling,” which shows how passionate she is about this topic. Many scouts felt strongly about this question, but the one scout who chose to bite didn’t give an explanation, so that really didn’t solve the mystery for us after all.

Our next controversy is about if pineapple should go on pizza or not, and surprisingly, there was almost a tie. One more scout chose “yes” over “no”, making the more favored answer “yes”. Of the scouts who chose “yes”, one of them said, “YESSSS pineapple on pizza is just one of those amazing delicacies. I love pineapple so much which explains half my reason for liking it. But the pineapple also brings out the flavor.” On the other hand, one of the scouts who chose “no” said, “Fruits on pizza is a monstrosity. It should be illegal. Pineapples have this weird taste and they are juicy which makes the cheese and sauce wet which is disgusting.” They sure seemed to know exactly why they hated the pineapple-pizza combo so much! Both of these responses are quite the opposite, and express how a simple question can get such different yet strong answers.

Last but not the least, we have the age old cats or dogs argument. This is a very commonly known question, and in the survey, around one-fourth of the scouts chose dogs over cats making dogs a clear winner among our scouts. This survey was a fun way to express our opinions, and even though we didn't get a completely unanimous answer for any of the questions, it was fun to see what Troop 220 had to say about these controversies.
