I’m sure that we have all made or heard of origami before in our lives, but do any of us actually know the history of origami, and how it came to be? Origami originated in Japan, and is composed of the Japanese words oru (to fold) and kami (paper), which gave it the name of “origami”. Paper originated in China, and was brought to Japan in the sixth century, where it was thought of as a luxury. By the Edo period, folding paper in Japan became a recreational activity, and by 1797, instructions on how to fold paper were first published. It also became popular in Europe, and soon enough kindergarten-aged children were doing simple origami. By the 1950s, origami patterns were published and widely available, making origami globally known and recognized. Today, origami is known as a fun pastime, and there is no limit to the different kinds of objects and figurines you can make using paper.
